R&D Intern
Join neustark today to help shape the carbon removal journey!
To limit global warming to 1.5°C, the IPCC states that net-zero emissions must be achieved by 2050. In addition to substantial emission reductions, this goal can only be reached through the global deployment of CO₂ removal solutions at the scale of billions of tons.
Neustark is a leading provider in this rapidly growing market: we have developed a solution to store CO₂ from the air in recycled mineral waste such as demolished concrete or incineration bottom ash.
Neustark has already deployed storage site in Switzerland and across Europe, storing CO₂ from the atmosphere on a daily basis. We are currently scaling our activities to significantly increase our storage capacity.
We are an international team working primarily from Switzerland, enabling permanent CO₂ storage for a better future for all generations on our planet.
What R&D does at neustark:
In the R&D team, we continuously work on optimizing our technology and exploring new storage approaches. You can actively contribute to the latest developments and be involved in all phases of a project, from concept idea to testing. In addition, we generate laboratory data on various material streams for other departments. We also use Python-based modeling to simulate and optimize storage site performance..
What your job could look like:
You help drive forward current developments at neustark, including areas such as construction, process engineering, electrical engineering, programming, or manufacturing.
You carry out test series with developed prototypes in the field.
You take responsibility for our laboratory, where we test customer materials for their CO₂ storage potential.
You help integrate and interpret the resulting data into a database.
You conduct internal lab campaigns to explore additional material streams beyond recycled concrete as CO₂ sinks.
You continue developping our model to further understand and optimize our storage sites.
What’s in it for you:
Sustainability mission: Together, we create a tangible climate impact through permanent CO₂ storage and removal.
Start-up atmosphere with strong financial backing: You benefit from flat hierarchies, fast decision-making, and strong investor support.
Hybrid work culture: We value collaboration and flexibility, with working time split between our Swiss hubs in Bern and Zurich, and remote work depending on job needs.
Teamwork: We work closely across teams to make a real impact, regularly aligning on goals and celebrating successes together.
Professional environment: A fast-growing organization with many opportunities for responsibility and development.
Employee benefits:
Contributions to public transport and your mobile phone
Fair vacation entitlement, including local public holidays and country-specific arrangements
Employee-led learning lunches, yoga, and running sessions
What we’re looking for:
You are pursuing or have completed a degree in mechanical engineering, process engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. (ETH/EPFL or similar)
You are hands-on and enjoy practical work, including outdoor activities.
Collaboration is important to you, including with external partners and suppliers.
You are motivated, quick to learn, and eager to take ownership of projects.
You have some knowledge in coding (Python).
You speak English; German and/or French are preferred.
Work location:
On average, 3-4 days in the Bern area and the rest flexible between our Bern or Zurich offices or home office.
